Abstract

This study aims to understand what criteria are involved in the perception by health personnel of the performance of public hospitals in Cameroon. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used on data collected by questionnaire from 53 public hospitals in Cameroon. The PCA made it possible to identify, on the one hand, the components for measuring the performance of public hospitals and, on the other hand, to construct a performance index that would make it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of public hospitals in terms of performance in Cameroon. After analyzing the data using this technique, two observations were made. Firstly, it emerges that hospital performance in public hospitals in Cameroon is assessed via three determinants. These are the achievement of goals, quality of care and adaptation to the needs of the population. Secondly, it is noted that the performance of public hospitals in Cameroon is of lower quality. Indeed, only 48% of hospitals seem to meet the criteria for good hospital performance.
