Abstract

Despite the growing attention to social entrepreneurship as an area of academic research, it is still in its infancy. Research over the past two decades has been primarily devoted to establishing a conceptual foundation. Empirical papers have gradually appeared since the turn of the century. Although still outnumbered by concept papers, these papers are of considerable importance to the evolution of social entrepreneurship as a field of scientific inquiry. This research paper puts forward a view of social entrepreneurship as a process that catalyzes social change and gives importance to social needs in a way that they are not dominated by direct financial benefits. Social entrepreneurship is perceived to be different from other forms of entrepreneurship because of the relatively higher priority given to the promotion of social value as opposed to economic value. This finding is demonstrated through a case study of a social purpose association.
