Objective : this paper aims to study the managerial and economic factors that impact the operational performance of banks in the WAEMU.
Method : the methodological approach is based on a dynamic panel with the generalized method of moments (GMM). The data come from the BCEAO database and cover a sample of 83 WAEMU banks during the period from 2012 to 2018, i.e. 581 observations.
Results : our study shows that with respect to managerial factors, the size and weight of credit risk negatively impact the operational performance of WAEMU banks, while the financial size and age of the bank positively impact this performance. As for economic factors, we find that the GDP growth rate and the BRVMC index performance have a positive impact on the return on assets of these banks, while the inflation rate has a negative impact.
Originality / Relevance : This work draws its originality from the fact that we analyzed the influence of both managerial and macroeconomic factors on the operational performance of banks in the eight. It could be useful in decision-making and strategy implementation for bank executives, portfolio managers, investors and the BCEAO.
