Abstract

Purpose: This article explores in which cases leader perfectionism fosters employee creativity.

Approach: An exploratory quantitative study made it possible to compare our 4 hypotheses to the Moroccan context of high-tech companies. We used the questionnaire as a data collection tool.

Results: The effects of leader perfectionism on engagement, emotional exhaustion, and creativity depended on employees' locus of control. Our results indicate that internals can benefit from leader perfectionism (with diminishing returns) through increased engagement without experiencing the downsides of perfectionism such as emotional exhaustion. In contrast, externals suffered from perfectionism due to increased emotional exhaustion without experiencing the benefits of perfectionism such as engagement.

Originality: We adopted the lenses of self-regulation theory to understand the interplay between leader perfectionism and employee creativity. We have also contributed to research on creativity in companies by highlighting the elements likely to stimulate employee creativity.
